Chains
To the boy with eyes like glaciers
staring into the dark, shifting void.
Not even the sorrow moon can bear this sight.
She hides beneath her veil as all do
in times such as this.
Icy, iron chains clink together
as he twists them between his numb fingers.
They are heavy and his hands move slowly.
Frozen slush cracks beneath each careful step
and his breath clouds the air like smoke.
The world is unbearably still…
like it somehow knows what's coming.
He's at the old soccer field now-
the one we used to play in as children.
We were so innocent.
The chains rattle suddenly, then silence.
Keep walking, I beg you.
It's only a nightmare.
He stops beneath the bleachers.
There is no feeling left in the boy…
he stares at nothing.
His breathe is screaming out,
begging to be relieved.
For a moment, the glaciers in his eyes
become an avalanche,
exposing all that is hidden within that frozen gaze.
He is terrified.
Without looking down, he takes up the chain
and loops it around his neck.
I beg you boy, please
Don't go.
His arms shake as he locks the other end
around the bleacher.
He lets himself fall.
To the boy with eyes like glaciers,
May the void be more gentle.
